The Fallen

In some parts of the world, this weekend is a time to remember our loved ones who have gone before us. We recall the things that made them special … the things they taught us … the love they brought to our lives.

Remembering them can be painful because we’re reminded of all we’ve lost.

But remembering can be joyful, too, because we’re reminded of everything we've gained by sharing our life’s path with them.

In Mexico, they emphasize the joyful aspect of remembering. Instead of mourning the dead, they welcome their spirits back to visit during Day of the Dead celebrations on November 1st and 2nd. As part of the festivities, family and friends create altars with the deceased’s favorite foods, drinks and belongings. Gravesites are decorated, and the whole community gathers for lively parades with music, dancing and colorful costumes.

However we choose to honor our departed loved ones, it’s important to keep their memory alive. Even though they’re gone, they’re still a part of us – just as leaves that have fallen from the tree are still a part of the tree and always will be.
