Changes

Colorful fall leaves on a vine climbing a stone wall.

When leaves change colors, I’m always filled with wonder and awe. Could any other transformation be quite as breathtaking? Yes, I’ve seen one that rivals the fall leaf spectacle: It's the change that can take place in a person.

A personal transformation is not always as outwardly visible as it is with leaves – we don’t burst into brilliant colors during our transition – but the change can be striking nonetheless.

I’ve seen people who struggled with alcohol walk away from their addiction and never touch another drop. I’ve seen people who worried they could never be good parents blossom into loving, tender caregivers after their children were born.

It’s a testimony to the human spirit that we can take our lives in a new direction when we commit ourselves fully to a change.

I’ve seen people who were materialistic and ego-driven become other-centered and compassionate. I’ve seen people who were apathetic become strong advocates of social change. I’ve seen people who were hesitant to try new things embrace new adventures and experiences.

Who we are now is not who we are always destined to be.

If you live in a part of the world where the leaves change colors, I hope you’ll appreciate the wondrous transformation. And let's remember that wherever we live, whatever the season, we can witness positive changes taking place in people around us. Those can be pretty impressive transformations, too.
